Texas apples are the first to be harvested in the United States and are extremely sweet due to our abundant sunshine and long growing season. There are a number of apple orchards in Texas where Texas consumers can taste and purchase sweet tree ripened apples and delicious apple products.

Apple Orchards in Texas can be traced to the mid 1850’s. Early apple orchards were located in Georgetown, Lindendale and Fruitland. The American colonists first introduced apples to America around 1640. Honeybees were also brought over from England for pollination. Settlers heading west and to Texas brought apple trees with them.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a quote by J.T. Stinson, Director of the Missouri Fruit Experimental Station, given in a presentation at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. The 1904 World’s Fair was also the site where Frank Davis of Fruitland, Texas won first prize for his Arkansas Black apple variety.

Most apple trees planted today are grafted onto dwarf or semi-dwarf rootstocks and produce trees much smaller than the standard thirty-foot tree. Dwarf apple trees produce apples much earlier than standard trees, are easier to maintain, and produce a larger percentage of quality fruit.

Fresh Texas apple cider is so naturally sweet that people have accused growers of “putting too much sugar” in their cider.
