When I asked fellow Texan’s if they knew we grew apples in Texas, nine out of ten said no. They also were surprised to learn that we grow popular varieties such as Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, Red Delicious and the list goes on. After being surprised by the lack of apple knowledge among Texas consumers, I decided to produce a documentary video on Texas Apples to help spread the word.
“Texas Apples” is a documentary covering Texas apple history, Texas apple growers, and the science of growing apples in Texas. The video is a great educational tool that includes Texas geography, history and science. In the video, we visit three of Texas’ large apple orchards and meet the growers. You can learn about early apple production in Texas including locations and growers. Also learn how apples are grown including root stock selection, planting, pruning, thinning and picking.
The video is available for purchase on DVD for $20.00 (plus shipping).
John Caballero, producer and grower is available to present a lecture on apple growing in Texas.
